Mercury and Vision Loss

Mercury is a substance that naturally occurs in air, water, and soil. Most humans have small measurable amounts in their bodies. These amounts are well below the levels associated with detrimental health effects. In sufficient quantities, mercury can be toxic to humans. Mercury can be inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream. Most studies suggest it takes prolonged exposure to certain types of the element. Some of the most common sources of prolonged exposure include work environment, food contamination, or consumer products that contain mercury:
• Unregulated beauty products
• Thermometers & barometers
• Light bulbs & switches
• Auto parts
• Batteries
• Fish and seafood
• Antique jewelry

These products have minimal health threats unless they are damaged, leaking, or heated to the point of separation and causing vapor. If they are damaged and leaking mercury, follow proper clean-up and disposal protocols on the EPA website. https://www.epa.gov/mercury/mercury-consumer-products

The products, generally most concerning to people, is they hear about mercury in fish and seafood. Mercury is emitted into the air from various sources like volcanoes, forest fires, burning fossil fuels and municipal waste. The mercury that is in the air then enters into bodies of water like lakes and streams or on land, where it can run off into the waterways. The level of mercury in fish and seafood depends on a particular species, its place in the food chain, how long they live, and what they eat. Larger species like sharks, swordfish, and mackerel (larger species that are on top of the marine food chain tend to have higher mercury content). The most commonly eaten fish and seafood, that are low in mercury are shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, and catfish.

In terms of eye health, high levels of mercury can affect all parts of the eye. Symptoms include:
• Discoloration of the lens
• Blurry vision
• Conjunctivitis
• Tremors of the eyelids
• Peripheral vision loss followed by central vision loss

Despite the minute threat, the truth is, the health benefits of consuming fish and seafood far outweigh the risk. For most healthy people, the risk of mercury from eating fish and shellfish is not a health concern. Eating fish and seafood is still encouraged for eye health. Fish and shellfish have high-quality protein and other essential nutrients, are low in saturated fat, and contain omega-3 fatty acids. It is a vital part of a healthy diet. Eating 2 meals a week (12oz) of fish and seafood will give the average person the nutrients they need without having to worry about the level of mercury they ingest.

Does Being in Love Really Show in the Eyes?

The straight-up answer is yes. Science has proven it.
Attraction and love are often expressed through body language and the eyes show this with non-verbal communication:
• Mutual gaze
• Pupil dilation
• Eye flirting
• Smiling

Eyes matter when it comes to attraction and love. When people are surveyed about the features of a romantic partner, eyes are always at or near the top answers.

A study done at Harvard University results showed that couples who were together for a long time looked at each other while talking 75% of the time versus 30 to 60% on average.

There is a difference that shows in the eyes when someone is experiencing love or lust. A study at the University of Chicago noted that people feeling love look directly into the eyes of the other person. Someone feeling lust looked at the body parts of the other person. The study also showed that different networks of brain regions are activated by love or lust.

Seems all the great poets such as Shakespeare, Byron, Browning, and Chaucer have known this long before science.

Pediatric Glaucoma

Pediatric glaucoma is relatively rare. It occurs in the general population of approximately 1 in 10000 births.

Pediatric glaucoma is often referred to as congenital glaucoma. Usually, this form of glaucoma gets diagnosed within the first year of life. When kids have glaucoma, vision loss usually happens more quickly and is often more severe than it is for adults.

Some types of pediatric glaucoma are hereditary. About 10% of cases are inherited. Most inherited cases are caused by inadequate development of the eye's drainage systems before birth. This results in high (IOP) Intraocular pressure in the eye(s) that eventually damages the optic nerve. The optic nerve is the nerve that carries messages from the retina to the brain.

Symptoms of childhood glaucoma:

  • Enlarged eyes
  • Cloudiness of the cornea
  • Sensitivity to light.

If left untreated, glaucoma can cause permanent vision loss and even disfigurement.

Currently, pediatric glaucoma is treated by lowering the IOP first with medicines. When that fails to lower IOP enough, surgical intervention is taken. Trabeculectomy and goniotomy are the most common surgical interventions to open drainage canals for fluid from the eyes.

  • Trabeculectomy is a surgical procedure where the surgeon identifies the drainage system canal and places a device in the canal wall to open it and to help the fluid inside the eye to drain better.
  • Goniotomy is a minimally invasive procedure to remove a section of trabecular mesh tissue (a filter-like tissue that fluid in the eye would normally flow through to exit the anterior chamber). The new opening allows for the drainage of fluid from the eye.

Even after surgery, medications may be required to control IOP.

Many children with pediatric glaucoma develop:

  • Myopia (nearsightedness)
  • Amblyopia ("lazy eye")
  • Strabismus (misalignment of the eyes)

While glaucoma can't be cured, it can be managed. Monitoring eye pressure and prompt and aggressive treatment for reducing IOP can help sustain sight as long as possible.
