February 3rd is National Wear Red Day

February is American Heart Month, on the first Friday of the month (February 3, 2023) is National Wear Red Day, a day to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease in women and to help save lives.

American Heart Month is when the nation spotlights heart disease.

The term "heart disease" refers to several heart conditions, including coronary artery disease and heart attack.

Cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year.

Women also experience unique life events, pregnancy and menopause that can have an impact on heart disease risks.

The American Heart Association's “Go Red for Women” movement was launched in 2004. The goal was to raise awareness and fight one of the greatest health threats woman face.

Women are more likely than men to feel non-specific symptoms. In addition to the commonly known symptoms, a person may feel breathlessness, chest pain, or pressure. Women may experience:
• Neck, jaw, upper back, or upper belly discomfort
• Pain in one or both arms
• Nausea & vomiting
• Migraine
• Fatigue
• Heartburn
• Sleep changes
• Feeling "out of it"

Show your heart some love by:
• Preparing tasty, nutritious meals.
• Control hypertension
• Following a bedtime routine that allows for 7 to 9 hours of sleep
• Stress less
• Get a daily dose of physical activity
• Take your medications as prescribed and keep your medical appointments

It may seem trivial to wear red on the first Friday in February, but you may save a life just by making someone aware.

Reasons Not to Buy Online

Most would agree shopping online is a convenience. It saves time and can be done at any time of the day or night. Is this convenience worth the potential risks to your vision health?

Online eye exams are unable to determine if a patient may have cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, or other conditions. Conditions that would have been disclosed during a comprehensive eye exam. Early detection can help improve treatment outcomes.

When taking an online eye exam, even if an eye care provider reviews your results, there was no eye care professional there to insure the vision test was done correctly. Meaning the reviewed results could be skewed.

Ordering glasses online only gives you one prescription measurement per pair of glasses or contacts. Most patients have different vision measurements in each eye. There is also a chance of entering your prescription incorrectly in the order. Progressive lenses and bifocals are even more tricky tiny errors can have a huge impact on the final product.

Glasses ordered online you only get a limited number of frames to try on. In a vision center, there are typically racks and racks of frames to try on to see how they look and feel.

Is all the convenience very convenient when you have to return and exchange the glasses multiple times if the vendor even allows returns? If you feel strongly about ordering online be sure to read the return policy carefully. When you shop in person the glasses are custom-made for you.

Think of this when you try to save a couple bucks by ordering your vision care online. If you have an undetected eye disease because you didn't get a comprehensive eye exam the FedEx driver, can't bring a fix for that!

Winterize your Eyes

Your mother has probably told you your entire childhood to put on your hat, gloves, and scarf and to bundle up for the cold. Has she warned you to protect your eyes from the cold too?

While the colder air in winter is also drier, it is not uncommon for many people to experience occasional dry eye. This eye health issue can surface in a combination of symptoms, including:

  • Dryness
  • Excessive watering
  • Itchy eyes
  • Double vision
  • Irritation
  • Redness
  • Burning
  • Overall discomfort

While occasional dry eye is uncomfortable, this eye health issue can lead to more severe vision issues if it is not taken seriously. These issues can include:

  • A scratch on the surface of the eye (corneal abrasion)
  • Corneal ulcers
  • Inflammation
  • Blurred vision
  • Vision loss

Other challenges to your eyes in winter include:

  • Allergens
  • Snow glare
  • Freezing wind chills
  • UV rays (even on cloudy days)

To protect your eyes indoors from dry eye and allergens:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Decrease caffeine
  • Use preservative-free eyedrops
  • Eliminate the use of ceiling fans
  • Point car vents away from your face
  • Use a humidifier to increase moisture in the air
  • Place warm compresses on your eyes to soothe them
  • Blink more frequently
  • Wear a sleep mask at night
  • For allergens, take an over-the-counter antihistamine but increase your water intake even more.

To protect your eyes outdoors:

  • Wear sunglasses to shield your eyes from the wind and UV rays
  • Wear a hat with a brim
  • Eye injuries happen with the wind picking up debris or car tires spinning out in the snow and sending projectiles into the air.
  • If you take part in outdoor winter sports, wear snow goggles or a face shield
